Henna is primarily used for cosmetic purposes. It contains a keratin, or protein that stains the epidermal layer of the skin and it is harmless. This stain may vary depending upon the time that it is left to apply, the quality and how well one’s skin absorbs and responds to it. ( Silk and Stone, 2013)

Among the various colors and types of henna are black henna, red henna, natural henna and herbal henna. All of the aforementioned can be found in Qatar except black henna. It is no longer available as contained Para-phenylenediamine (PPD) and was considered unsafe. This form of henna can be hazardous because it is proved to cause blisters, sores and scarring. Some manufacturers chose to use black dye with PPD, although not all black henna is harmful. ( Henna products, 2013)
